Cultural Infrastructure
Definition
According to the scholarly literature, cultural infrastructure refers to buildings, structures and places where culture is consumed and produced. For Romania, this classification involves the following elements:
- Buildings, structures and places where culture is consumed: places where the experience of the cultural act takes place, where citizens participate in culture, exhibit or sell cultural products. For example, libraries, museums, theatres, cinemas, concert halls, galleries and historical monuments.
- Buildings, structures and places where culture is produced: places of cultural creation, where the creative work usually carried out by artists, performers, producers, craftsmen or digital artists takes place. For example, creative hubs, rehearsal spaces, recording, film and television studios, and industrial facilities used by creative and cultural companies.
- Cultural equipment and facilities: the 2009 UNESCO Framework for Cultural Statistics defines specific cultural and technical equipment as “Auxiliary equipment and materials (cross-cutting domain) covering “tools of cultural products and activities”. Cultural products (goods and services) defined in the different domains are those directly associated with cultural content, while supporting equipment and materials are related to supporting industries as well as ancillary services (even if they have partly cultural content) that facilitate or enable the creation, production and distribution of cultural products.
