General statistics

Between the years 2011 and 2019, the number of cinemas in operation had a general upward trend, followed by a decrease during the 2020-2021 pandemic. The number of screens (cinema halls) increased by over 210 from 2011 to 2022, similarly to the total number of seats in the theaters, which increased from 56,728 in 2011 to 79,779 in 2022.

The dynamics of the number of spectators is dependent on the evolution of cinema shows:

  • Both the number of shows and the number of spectators have seen constant increases between 2011 and 2017.
  • In 2020, in the context of the pandemic crisis, the number of cinema shows decreased by almost 70%. However, in 2022, the number of screenings returned to a level comparable to 2019, with 64,000 shows being organized.

By number of screens, seats and spectators in 2022

The following graph shows the dispersion of cinemas depending on the relationship between two variables: the number of seats (vertical axis) and the number of spectators recorded in the reference year (horizontal axis).

Cinemas are classified according to the number of screens (grouped in categories by color) and the number of spectators (variation in the size of the circles).

The visualisation allows for the filtering of information by development region.
